What to watch when you’re stoned is as complicated as which strain of marijuana best suits your personality, or what your favorite color is. It’s a personal thing. Depends on the type of day you’re having, who you’re hanging out with, you get it. Then there is the more pressing questions. Did you put a towel by the door? Is the ionizer on? Is it a movie that you can snack through out, or will there be a break in the action to order some take-out. Are you on a couch, sitting on the floor, or like me, in your classic lazy boy chair? Every detail can matter.
How big is your TV? Are you streaming, and did you check the wifi status so you are not continuously being interrupted for buffer time? Seriously, buzz kill. Is your laptop nearby for when your ADD kicks? Should you watch it in 3D? Are you in the mood to wear those 3D glasses for 2 hours? Should you plan on more ADD breaks? Did you fill a red cup with water? All this, and you haven’t even sat down yet...The pressure! Lucky for you, we’ve narrowed down the infinite possibilities to just these few movies to watch stoned, no matter what type of situation you’re in. All you have to do now is enjoy...oh yea, and snacks!
Across the Universe
While Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe did not do so well in theaters, it has seriously resonated a cult following within the pot populace. “When you’re regurgitating the same old, same old, you don’t grow as a culture. My work is to transform the audience, that’s the journey of the director,” said Taymor. “We take life experiences and show them rom a different perspective, so when you talk about reality, that’s not about putting a mirror on society… it’s just slicing it up differently.” Beatles music and technicolor flow freely, transporting you outside your own mind, and into the movie. All you need is love, a bong rip, and this movie.
Surprised by this one, aren’t you? One of the most solid childhood-nostalgia movies you can find is also hit amongst stoners, who knew? Nothing beats a sing-a-long when you’re stoned, and that “I'll Make a Man Out of You" montage gets me every single time. The music in Disney’s Mulan is made for stoners, there is no question there. Combined with a bad-ass Rocky style training scene? In our minds, we are Mulan, and we will become a man! Then of course, there is Eddie Murphy as the dragon. Eddie Murphy is hilarious in pretty much everything. It’s not recommended to chew food while watching these scenes, it gets all over the floor.
The use of cannabis can be dated back to 2000 BC when the ancient central and south Asian populations used it to view reality from a different perspective by altering one’s state of mind. There is only one. Nothing had ever quite been like The Matrix before it, and the truth is there has yet to be an alternate reality movie to top it. Yes, I love Inception, but it is not at the level of The Matrix. Maybe skip this one if you tend to get paranoid. The Matrix will have even the most stable minded folk questioning reality, especially when you’ve toked a few.
The Lego Movie
This was not just another reboot of a memorable film, this was a reboot of our childhood. Everything really is awesome! The adaptation of LEGO toys for The Lego Movie was knocking on the door of the sentimental value of our childhoods. It is a privilege to enhance the most awesome toy adaption film in recent history with the potent strains of sativa. The attention to detail is elevated and celebrity voice overs are mind blowing. What a trip.
2001: A Space Odyssey
The ultimate sci-fi stoner trip, 2001: A Space Odyssey is brilliantly odd. It is at times boring if watched without enhancement, but stoned these long moments of silence and orchestral music are beyond brilliant. Matched with the stunning visuals of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, you have a stoner match made in heaven. With less than an hour of actual dialogue during the 2 and a half hour film, Kubrick’s embryonic journey is trippy as space travel gets. A beautiful mélange of color, psychedelic imagery, and narrative.suspense and psychedelic imagery—and a sonic masterpiece to boot—the glacially-paced sci-fi classic pins man against machine in an engrossing zero-gravity tug of war. No wonder it’s been a stoner staple for over 40 years.
Sure, it's got some pretty lame moments, yet it is perhaps the most trippy of all disney cartoons. It is truly a classic. The music is mind blowing. It must be seen digitally remastered and in 3D, if available. From "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", "Night on Bald Mountain," to "The Rites of Spring" the animation is visually stunning. It was done by hands for fucks sake. The demons and dinosaurs can be a bit scary while under the influence. A personal recommendation for snacks during a screening of stoned Fantasia is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Now picture the whole thing in your head, and it is clear why this movie ranks on this list.
The NeverEnding Story
After Atreyu wakes up in Falkor’s arms, the luck dragon says to the young boy, “I like children!” further, “You talked in your sleep,” winks at him, and then asks him to scratch behind his ear while he moans in pleasure, “Thaaaaaat’s soooo goooood.” Thats how you feel when viewing The NeverEnding Story baked off your rocker. Then there is the giant turtle, Morla. This old stoner, in the exquisite 80’s puppet extravaganza spends the days hanging in a swamp. When Atreyu tells Morla that if there is no action, the nothing of it all will destroy the world, Morla looks to be too stoned to care.
Alice in Wonderland
It is enough that this classic stoner cinema is cited in The Matrix. Morpheus calmly explains, "You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. And its deep. Cheshire Cat disappears leaving his smile behind. Alice takes mushroom to change her physical appearance. A big caterpillar smokes an elaborate bong. The whole atmosphere of this tale story is so profoundly surreal, that it can only be enjoyed while in the fog of a brilliant weed induced state of euphoria.
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
While South Park has always been offensive to one group or another, it has established the boundaries of of bad-taste satires. In its own brilliant way, the show forces us to analyze the reality of the society we live in, hypocrisy and all. It is really not a show for children in any way shape or form other than the trippy animation. It simplicity is complex. Potty humor is taken to a new level, that even the biggest prudes have no choice but to spit up when they giggle. The cartoon explores issues like religion, stem cell research, sexuality, drugs, politics and celebrities. As far as stoner anime goes this really is the cream of the crop. Once your done with the film, you have years of TV highs to come.
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny
I almost feel like you should get stoned before I even try to explain this film. The story involves two wannabe rockers on a mission to find a pick forged out of Satan’s tooth. The pick gives its owner super rock powers. Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny is Jack Black's defining moment in movie history. Never before was a film so clearly made by a stoner for a stoner.
Sometimes it is just about the visuals. Pan’s Labyrinth is a late addition to this list as well as a controversial on. Yes, it is a beautiful film and Guillermo del Toro is a master of eye candy, but its sad and a bit scary at times. It really boils down to how deeply intellectual can you get while high. Some argue that the spanish subtitles are annoying when one is high. I always say if you live in this country, you better learn to speak Spanish. The visuals, score, and complex storytelling are breathtaking and ironically some diehard cinephiles believe this to be their favorite film to watch high.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Most of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is actually taking place in its protagonist Joel’s head. Played by Jim Carrey, Joel is having his memories of his ex-girlfriend erased. Kate Winslet plays his love interest, Clementine, erased. That should be enough to get you going. Its more Phillip K Dick then Jim Carey comedy. Its about a 17 minute journey to just the opening credits, so this is a definite start with popcorn film. Mark Ruffalo is fucking funny.
Nothing is quite as funny or mind bending as watching Groundhog Day baked. “Am I right or am I right?” It may feel like, “It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be grey, and it’s gonna last you for the rest of your life.” If you’ve seen Groundhog Day, then you know exactly what i mean. Bill Murray and Andie McDowell, are perfect together. Great comedies often feel tied to a particular place and time. Not Groundhog Day. For a trip that will keep a smile on your face the whole time, Punxsutawney is the town for you.
This is an important film. Mostly because absolutely nothing is real in the film. Even the people seem like robot actors, which is why they had to take rolls in a film called Sharknado. What's it about you ask? Perhaps you are already stoned. Its about a tornado of sharks of course. Jaws is good when you are sober and straight. You don't want to watch vicious shark movies when you are wasted. Its Sharknado you turn to with a little buzz.
On Earth Day, Disney Nature released the film ‘Oceans’. It’s a big-screen, high quality look into a part of the world that most of us can only imagine. Less nature documentary and more visual poem, the film is light on information and heavy on inspiration. This film is perfect for those stoners who like to wax philosophical. Sit back, and enjoy nature in all it's beauty.
