Things to Avoid During a Smoke Sesh

Make the most of your best buds (of the human and green variety) by remembering the things to avoid during a smoke sesh.

There is nothing better than finding a free night to relax with a few friends and share a joint and some laughs. But having the perfect session involves preparing the right crew and creating the perfect environment. Take a look at this list of things to avoid during a smoke sesh to make sure you have a smooth and fun high.

Hardcore stoners can get a little specific about what they smoke and who they smoke with. Being high is really only fun when you’re in the right environment and can relax. Lots of people don’t enjoy smoking with strangers and instead have their sessions with a small and trusted circle of friends in places they know. Partaking with a group of friends can lead to fun conversation and great nights together, but you should do some preparation to make sure everyone has a good time together. Even your best friends might not be right for the circle, and you have to be careful about who and where you partake together.

The Hoarder

We have all met this person. Someone who never has their own green, never adds any weed to the communal pile, and yet always manages to get high without spending a dollar. Be on the lookout for people looking to take advantage of your circle or your generosity. While sometimes this might not be a big deal, it is the kind of thing that can build up into resentment and really ruin your high for the night.

In a similar vein, watch out for smokers who get distracted during your session, and end up hogging the joint, bong, or conversation. Being high can be distracting, but practicing polite smoking is a must for the perfect sesh.

The Freakout

We have all probably been the creeper before, but it is usually something that happens to brand new smokers. Anyone who is prone to staring, anxiety, or freaking out other people with fearful talk should receive an immediate ban for the session. The nature of smoking weed means these kinds of bad feelings and worries can be contagious, bringing the whole group down with worry.

Some people go so far as to actually try to make other people paranoid. While it might be funny to watch your friend freak out a bit, this is a huge faux-pas.

If you have an anxious friend who likes getting high, let them experiment with strains and figure things out in their own time, and keep your sessions limited to fun and calm tokers.

Getting Too Philosophical

One of the best things about a group sesh is the conversation it inspires. It can be fun to chat about the every day and the fantastic while you’re all feeling the effects of the weed. But many of us smoke so we can relax after a long and stressful week, and it is best to avoid topics that are too philosophical or too heavy. It is really hard to enjoy your snacks and jokes when you’re entirely focused on whether life is meaningless.

Lipstick, Lip Gloss, Lip Balm

If you’re joining in a session, no lip products can be allowed! There is nothing worse than sharing a pipe, bong, or joint that gets coated with a few different lip products. If you’re attending a session, take it off before you partake. If you’re the host, you can outright ban these products from your own gatherings.

Spitty Smoking

There is nothing (nothing!) worse than being passed a joint that has been made soggy by someone’s spit. Group sessions, and friendships, have been ruined that way. If you’re hanging with group of friends, be sure to partake in the joint with dry lips. The paper does not need to make contact with your tongue and if it does, don’t be surprised if your friends don’t invite you around any more.

Selfish Ashers

You might have noticed that when a group is sharing a joint, some people will be careless about how they hand it around and won’t even bother to ash it before passing it along. This is one of the biggest smoking faux-pas you can make, and beyond risking a mess, the way the joint burns can actually be affected, meaning you all get less of a reaction. Make sure everyone in your session knows the basic smoking rules of etiquette before you get started

Sketchy Locations

There is unprecedented freedom and social acceptance for smokers, but this doesn’t mean you can burn it down any time and any place. If you’re planning to have a good sesh, find the perfect house, park, or backyard to try things out. Nothing can harsh a high more than an angry neighbour or parent breaking up the fun, and it is much easier to relax in a controlled and private environment.

Inexperienced Smokers

Group sessions are not for the inexperienced smoker. Whether you’re just getting started smoking green or you’re introducing some new friends, learning how you tolerate weed is not something best done with an audience. When you’re just getting to know new strains and types, be sure to smoke with only some close friends before moving on to larger group sessions. With the wrong strain, we are all prone to paranoia or having a bad night, but the more experienced you are, the more likely you are to avoid a bad public high.

As people become more open about using marijuana, the options for having a sesh with your friends have grown. There are now more public options, and less limitations on how and where you enjoy your green. Though there are new freedoms, it is important to do a little preparation and a little planning for a group smoking sesh. Be sure to have the right people, the right place, the right supplies, and the right attitude before joining in. If you’re the host, make note of this list of things to avoid during a group sesh, and you’ll be sure to have a great time.
