If there's one thing that potheads never lack, it's creativity—especially when it comes to enjoying cannabis. Most people have tried out the plant, but now with the "green rush" happening in half the states, things like cannabis oil, shatter, and wax are gaining popularity.

Shatter and the rest of these newcomers are all extracts that are chock-full of THC and CBD. Most often, they are extracted via butane and a bunch of other solvents. After extraction, they become highly potent oils that are ideal for vaporizing.

Newbies might not know the difference between all these extracts. In fact, they might even be wondering what are cannabis oil, shatter, and wax extracts used with.

Need a helping hand figuring things out? Here's what you need to know about each major cannabis extract.

What Are Cannabis Oil, Shatter, And Wax Extracts?

Oil, shatter, and wax are all extracts made from marijuana that have high amounts of cannabinoids in them. We've already covered that. However, there are differences in each type of extract out there. Let's start by describing each kind, shall we?

  • Marijuana shatter is a glass-like extract that is translucent and known for being high in terpenes. Shatter is considered to be the purest of all extracts. The term shatter comes from the fact that it tends to look like shattered glass. Sometimes, it's also called sap because it looks like tree sap.
  • Wax, on the other hand, is opaque extracts that have become crystallized due to agitation. Wax can be buttery in texture, or more "honeycomb-like" depending on how it's made.
  • Cannabis oil is a liquid extraction that is known for being high CBD and for having high THC levels. Oil has been long known to be good for relieving pain, seizures, and even helping patients with cancer treatments.

What Are Cannabis Oil, Shatter, And Wax Extracts Smoked With?

Judging by the sheer look of the extracts alone, it's kind of hard to imagine smoking them the same way you would a nugget of herb. However, smoking extracts isn't that much different. The most common way to smoke cannabis oil or similar extracts is to use what's called an "oil rig."

Oil rigs look like normal water pipes with slight modifications. More specifically, they have a metal nail where the bowl would typically be, and they tend to be more upright. Concentrates get put at the top of the nail, and basically functions like a water pipe otherwise.

A lot of vaporizers also tend to be capable of smoking shatter and wax extracts, so depending on the vape you have, you already may have what you need to enjoy extracts.

That being said, you don't necessarily have to splurge on a new rig or even a new vaporizer to enjoy cannabis extracts. A lot of people find that just placing wax or shatter alongside their regular bud, then rolling it up in a joint like usual works fine.

It's worth pointing out that you can also smoke a joint with oil. Just roll up a joint and add oil-soaked cannabis leaves in the middle. The end product will get you sky high. (Also, some people just use cannabis oil in making edibles, which will get you pretty wasted, too.)

Yep, it's very possible to dab without a rig. Even though you don't have to splurge on a new rig, many of the ways to smoke without glass pipes aren't quite the same experience. So, you may want to save up.

What Are Cannabis Oil, Shatter, And Wax Extracts Supposed To Do?

The reason why extracts became mainstream isn't just because they offer a more potent high, nor is it always a corporate grab for a new product. The truth is that highly concentrated extracts are a great way to harness the health benefits of medical marijuana.

People who have been suffering from a variety of ailments have been finding themselves turning to extracts in order to get help with symptoms. More specifically, chronic pain sufferers and those who have extreme seizure disorders have been noticing massive improvements by partaking in oil, shatter, and wax.

Though there's definitely a lot of benefits to medical marijuana, it's also safe to say that the fact that dabbing is now considered to be trendy, probably is also helping boost that popularity to new heights. However, like with any good herbal product, it's safe to say demand will continue to increase, because more potency tends to mean better results.

Considering the quality of extracts hitting the market, it's safe to say that these goodies will be here to stay. So, while we still may have some folks wondering what are cannabis oil, shatter, and wax extracts now, it's clear this will not be the case in the future.
